VOMIT REPORT: Vomits v Rockford Old Boys - October
2008
By Marc Kennedy
The WRC VOMITS (Veterans, Old Men, Idiots & Twits) hosted
the Rockford Old Boys (known as the Old Kishwaukeans after
the Kishwaukee River that meanders through that hoppin' burg
in northern Illinois) before the WRC match against Metropolis
on Saturday, October 18.
The final score notwithstanding, both sides had great fun
on a sunlit, mild day at the WRC pitch.
First of all thanks to Rockford for coming up to play: Ron,
Kaare, Tim, Dickie, Dave and all the Rockford guys who are
great sports and played hard.
Thanks to the Minotaurs, Mike, Steven, et al for filling out
their ranks.
Thanks to Referee Terry Godfrey though to his dismay he did
not get to penalize Marcus. He made up for it by penalizing
me instead. ("I'm not laying on the ball -- I'm just
slow...")
Early in the first half, flyhalf Simon Peek put us on about
the Rockford 15 with a 60 meter kick. Dan Marz, starting the
match with the backs, got the first score after the VOMITS
picked up a tipped ball off the Rockford lineout. Aubrey Fish
got the next try a few minutes later. Rockford then got on
the board, closing the gap.
Dan Marz got another try, this time via a pass from Compton
who was nearly in himself.
Fishy scored again, breaking tackles to and fro both times,
leading to a 24 to 5 VOMIT lead at halftime.
At the half we got a couple of reinforcements: Jeff Wesson
and his son Paul (former UW and Chicago Lion rugger) arrived,
along with Timur Yarnell-Cuceloglu. About halfway through
the hotly contested second half, Mike “Dr. Love”
Esterl powered over after a series of mauls that covered about
30 yards.
At the end of the match, Tim Probst scored for the first
time in 20 years (on the pitch, mind you, the jury is still
out on anything else...). It came off a nice movement that
started off a Rockford lineout. The ball changed hands with
five forwards before Tim rumbled over as the final whistle
blew, making the final 38 to 5.
I'm not sure who converted. But I believe Marzy started out
as a back and ended up a forward and Kirk became a Scientologist
at sometime during the match.
Thanks to Don Pfau, Simon Peek, Jon Moyer, Aubrey Fish, Josh
Hoyt, Paul Wesson, Jeff Wesson, Tim Yarnell-Cuceloglu, Compton
Kurtz, Kirk Sorenson, Dan Marz, Mike Dr. Love Esterl, Tim
Probst, Erik Goetz, Jeff Woods, and Keith Amberg. If I left
anyone out, my apologies. Steve Kirsh had to leave early.
Some d*%che told him the match was at ll am.
OB Spectators included Joe Wornson, Tom Humphries, Buck Buchanan,
Tooley, Opie and Skip Heffernan among others.
No major injuries were thankfully reported. Except Opie,
who pulled a hammy while waiting in the brat line after the
match.
One person was noticeably absent: As mentioned, Terry Godfrey
was somewhat disappointed because he didn't get the chance
to penalize Marcus Watson regularly. Marcus was curiously
absent; rumors have it that he was at the “Hair Today,
Gone Tomorrow” spa getting his uni-brow exfoliated.
Terry settled for penalizing me at least three times; after
the match he said my foot was up so much in the scrums he
thought I was auditioning for “A Chorus Line.”
Thanks to the WRC for the feed, beer and support. We hope
to have a home and away match in the spring. We owe the Condors
so keep a Chicago trip in mind.
Stay in touch,
Cheers,
Marc
