- WRC vs. Metro 3.29.08
-
- WRC took the long trip up to Minneapolis for their first
game against Metro in preparation of the Midwest DII finals.
Metro was preparing for their DI playoff run this spring
as well. The morning started off interesting as our jersey’s
were in an accident as they made their way to the Crossroads.
Last I heard Mike P. wasn’t hurt, but our jersey’s
were MIA for the home opener. So, WRC had to don the maroon
and white colors of the Middleton high school rugby club.
(Thanks Guido and Tyson.) The day was cold, windy and partly
sunny. The snow and ice still present on Metro’s pitch
because of the now infamous winter of 07-08, the game was
moved to Hamline University to be played on field turf on
a football field.
-
- The first half started off quick with a try from WRC.
The limited preparation of the prior week didn’t hinder
the ball movement and sharing between the backs and pack
to be able to effectively move the ball 70 meters on the
opening drive of the game. Compton Kurtz capped the WRC
fast start with a try 2 minutes into the game. The WRC continued
to control play and added a Nic Tyson try 24 minutes into
the half. Scott Martell added the conversion on that one.
Things went back and forth, but the late part of the first
half saw Metropolis starting to get back into the game.
WRC was able to handle the scrum downs and win all of their
lines. WRC scored again in the first half and went up 12-0
at half time.
-
- The second half was a bit different than the first half.
Metro came out hungry realizing that they were down 12-0.
With a lack of focus, discipline and defense in the second
half, WRC found themselves tied with Metro 12-12 at the
20 minute mark. WRC also went a man for a stomping foul
that sent a man to the bin (sorry again guys, and Compton).
With 2 minutes left at the end of the game WRC was only
down 12-17, but Metro was able to snake through several
missed tackles to put up the last try of the game and win
12-24.
-
- Coaches note: A good first outing against a good and solid
opponent. However losing a game we are in control of is
not going to get us far in the playoffs. We will need to
put 2 solid days of rugby together each time in the tournament.
There is a lot of work to do to get us ready for the Midwest
Tournament.

- Sharks vs. Metro 3.29.08
-
- The WRC Sharks are in the water!!!
On a breezy Saturday afternoon the WRC Sharks took on Metropolis
B side and although they did not come out victorious, the
Sharks are hungry for more. Falling by what this player
believes is no more than a 12 point margin the Sharks fought
well with tough defense and rucking. Look for the Sharks
to be a strong force pushing to earn playoff roster spots
this spring. Special thanks to players from "A"
side for their contributions (Scott, Rob, Fab, Pickles,
Compton, Boom, Sprinkles). This weekends Sharks consisted
of Mooney, Moots, Brad, Dan (old boy), Larry Teeling, Zack,
Dennis, Cody, Willie Loman. Special contribution by Blue,
a Metro old boy.
Cheers! -TBeatty
