- Vomits vs. Frogs 4.5.08
WRC Old Boys Hold on vs. Condors Old Boys 17-15
In the first annual match between the old boys squads
of the Wisconsin Rugby Club (the VOMITs) and the Westside
Chicago Condors (the Frogs), the host team hung on for a
seesaw 17-15 win. The score was really immaterial; it was
a spirited match on the first decent sunlit Saturday since
the fall which all enjoyed followed by a great feed and
post-match palaver. Many Frogs stayed in town which added
to the atmosphere at the Crossroads and later at the downtown
Great Dane. We owe it to the Frogs to give them a match
in Chicago either in the fall or next spring.
In the match, winger Mo Lubasi scored early off a pass
from Dan Marz and it remained 5-0 until the VOMITs scored
on a pushover try for a 10-0 lead. The latter was provided
with help from the few forward subs the VOMITs had –
Marcus Watson and Dave Kruse – who came off right
after the score, giving it the best two minutes of their
lives. We’ll never hear the end of it from either…I
guess we could refer to them as the short yardage “jumbo
package” in the scrum. As Marcus walked off the pitch,
he vociferously declared that he was done playing rugby
forever, though few took him seriously since only Cher has
retired more often.
The Frogs quickly knotted the score then went ahead before
half by swinging the ball out to their accomplished backs
who weaved back and forth across the pitch so much I thought
they scored at least four tries. Luckily it was only three
and the Frogs led 15-10 at halftime.
Midway through the second half, flyhalf Timur Yarnell-Cuceloglu
picked up a Frog knock on and loped from past midfield for
the score then drilled the ultimately winning conversion,
making it 17-15. But the match was far from over and both
sides played well though the last period, yet no one scored.

Special Thanks
* First to Condor President Ian Wagreich who arranged
for the Frogs to come to Madison , and to all the Frogs
for making the trip.
* Next to Terry Godfrey for reffing the match, who had to
mediate only one minor skirmish. Apparently there was a
disagreement over who were the bigger rubes: northern Illinoisans
or southern Wisconsinites. After a brief deliberation, all
agreed it was eastern Iowans. Sorry, Larry…
* Also to Greg Zukowski who played as well as prepared the
rice and curry dishes for the dinner post-match.
* Thanks to the VOMITs (as appear in the attached photo):
* Back row: Josh Hoyt, Dave Kruse, Tim Probst, Terry Godfrey,
Josh Schroeder, Luke Milligan, Greg Zukowski, Simon Peek,
Marcus Watson, Aubrey Fish, Marc Becker;
Front row: Don Pfau, Timur Yarnell-Cuceloglu, Military Bill
Peterik, Jeremy Holiday, Mike "Dr. Love" Esterl,
Dan Marz, Mo Lubasi, Steve Kirsh (missing: Jon Moyer)
Sitting: Marc Kennedy (in desperate need of either a hat
or a paper bag).
* Special thanks to Very Old Boy James Norman Borth who
arrived in full kit and a pewter mug believed to be a Paul
Revere original. While Borth declined to enter the fray,
he remained ready to play and with an emergency mug full
of beer just in case anyone got thirsty.
* Also seen loitering on the sidelines: Scott “Tooley”
Storlid, Marc Gillen, Jake Jacobson, Steve Cohan and Joe
Wornson, fresh from breast reduction surgery and therefore
a medical scratch before the game.
* Next VOMIT match…probably the Stuart Daily Tens
in August. But there is a possibility of playing the Northwest
Woodsmen in Chicago as part of the Churchill Cup late in
June. Stay tuned…
