Wisconsin Rugby Club races past Eastside Banshees 51-0

September 30, 2013

Wisconsin Rugby Club races past Eastside Banshees 51-0.

The Mighty Wisconsin Rugby Club (WRC) took to their beautiful home grounds at the Wisconsin Rugby Club Sports Complex in Cottage Grove, WI to face the unbeaten Eastside Banshees (4-0) of Minneapolis, MN.

Thirty MPH wind gusts proved to be haphazard for anyone attempting kicks or wide passes. The match was scoreless the first twenty minutes, then, shortly after a Miles Jobke penalty kick, Flanker Mike Price evaded multiple defenders to scored the first of what would end up being eight tries. (Video Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fdw1BoOVZIE)

The Wisconsin Rugby Club used the gusting first half tailwind to lead 17-0 at halftime. Facing a second half headwind, Inside Center Phil Winkler’s brilliant try scoring effort set the tone for the Mighty WRC. (Video Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5yBtxcTl2ak)

Phil Winkler’s try opened the floodgates for the WRC. Team Captain Jake Winkler scored shortly after his brother Phil, in a second half which saw the WRC score at will.

An unrelenting WRC defense lead to a turnover, which Phil Winkler scooped up and dashed 50 meters before offloading to Garett Donath. (Video Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-7K9dI3q2uU)

Off the ensuing restart Donath cemented himself as Man of the Match – scoring past the defense for his second try of the day. (Video Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlUW1a22PHs)

The 51-0 rout was completed with try scoring efforts from Scrumhalf Cody Moran-Guevara and Prop Forward Jim Sturm.

The defending National Champion Wisconsin Rugby Club stand alone atop the Midwest standings with a 5-0 record, having scored an astounding thirty-eight tries in their first five matches.

After Saturday’s dominating performance, Director of Rugby Sean Cullen reflected with optimism:

“We are proud of how the team has competed the first five games of the season. We have accomplished several of the goals established by the team at the beginning of the season. However, we have not met all our expectations for this season and hope to continue improving throughout the fall and into the spring.”

WRC vs Lincoln Park

187882_123380007730656_6663059_n

WRC maintains league dominance; begins Midwest season 2-0.
Carrying an eleven month undefeated record into Saturday; the Mighty Wisconsin Rugby Club continued their impressive start to the fall season with a 36-13 victory over the visiting Lincoln Park RFC. The WRC are 2 for 2 with bonus point victories so far (this fall) and look ready to march strongly back to the USA Rugby playoffs. Early success with swinging the ball wide and strong runs from the forwards set up wing Andrew Norton for a try at the 8:30. Norton (who ended with a hat trick of tries) was one of many impressive back line players. The visitors from Chicago struggled to use the limited possession that the WRC defense allowed; managing just two unconverted tries on the day. Try scorers for WRC included Andrew Norton(3), Kyle Malaney, Patrick Burmeister and Casey Endres. Stalwart Lock-Forward Rocco Delmedico was selected Man of the Match for the WRC.
Saturday’s victory brings the 2013 National Champions match record to 24 wins – 2 losses since January 2012. The two losses coming in the June 2012 National Championship vs. Rocky Gorge and an October 2012 loss to Saturday’s opponent (Lincoln Park).
